Outside the harbour, mobile coverage runs out sooner than people expect. A few miles offshore the signal becomes intermittent and, a little further out, disappears altogether. Until recently the only alternative was a marine satellite system at a cost that only made sense for large vessels. Starlink has changed that equation, but it has brought a new problem: many people install it as though the boat were a house, and the sea does not forgive that mistake.
The difference is not the equipment, it is the environment. An installation that lasts decades on a house can fail on a boat within a single season. These are the factors that change the approach entirely:

This is the part almost nobody raises, and it is usually the one that brings most peace of mind. A boat spends most of the year moored with nobody aboard. With a permanent connection you can have cameras, bilge sensors, mooring alarms or battery monitoring reporting in real time.
But there is a technical obstacle: Starlink operates behind CGNAT and does not provide a public IP, so by default you will not be able to connect to those cameras from outside. It is the same problem we solve on land-based installations, and the solution is the same: a dedicated tunnel that gives you a genuine fixed public IP.

Our office is in Torrevieja, right on the Vega Baja coast, so the area's boating world is on our doorstep. We cover the harbours and clubs of the southern Costa Blanca and the Mar Menor: Torrevieja, Cabo Roig, Campoamor, Guardamar del Segura, Santa Pola, Pilar de la Horadada and Torre de la Horadada, as well as San Javier, Santiago de la Ribera, Los Alcázares, San Pedro del Pinatar and Cartagena. We also travel to the north of the province and down towards Mazarrón and Águilas depending on the project.
We work with the boat ashore or afloat, depending on what the installation requires, and we coordinate with the boatyard or yacht club when permission is needed to carry out the work.
The Maritime plan is designed to operate under way, which is precisely what distinguishes it from the residential one. Plans intended for a fixed location are not provided for use while navigating, and the terms of service draw a distinction between them. Before installing, it is worth being clear about the real use it will get, because that determines the correct plan.
You can physically bolt it on, but it is a bad idea for two reasons. The first concerns the service: the residential plan is not intended for use while navigating. The second is the hardware: the mount and connectors of a domestic kit are not built for salt air, vibration and constant movement, and their working life on board is short. If you already own the equipment, we will inspect it and tell you frankly what can be reused.
It depends on the boat. The aim is to find the point with the largest possible clear view of the sky, bearing in mind that the mast, radar arch and superstructure cast shadows that shift with the heading. It is usually resolved on a stern arch, a dedicated platform or the flybridge roof, always with a fixing calculated for vibration and not merely for weight.
Actual consumption depends on the dish model and the conditions of use, so we do not quote a generic figure that then fails to hold: we calculate it for your specific installation. What is always required is resolving the supply from the boat's 12 or 24 V system and sizing it without compromising the rest of the electrical panel or the batteries' endurance.
